Bruce Goodwil Weetman, age 85 died February 20, 2019. He was born in January 2, 1934 to Bruce Alexander Weetman and Helen Tulloch Jamieson Weetman in Jersey City, NJ. He was raised in southeastern New York State, graduated from Pleasantville High School after which he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served in the U.S., Germany and France as a radar air traffic controller. After his discharge, he attended and graduated from the Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy with a Bachelors degree in geology. Prior to starting his senior year, Bruce was married to Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Powell of Fishkill, NY.
Upon graduation, Bruce was employed by Texaco, Inc. as an exploration geophysicist in New Orleans, LA. He served as an Auxiliary Deputy Sherriff in the Parish of Jefferson, LA. After Texaco, he accepted a position on the technical staff of the Environmental Research Company conducting research on ground motion associated with underground nuclear detonations on the Nevada test site. Following ERC in 1971, he was employed as an exploration geophysicist by the Conservation Division of the U.S. Geological Survey in New Orleans, LA. He accepted an assignment in Washington, DC in 1973. In 1984 he was appointed to the Federal Senior Executive Service and retired in 1994 as the Regional Director of oil & gas operations on the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf. While employed by the government, he was given a letter of commendation, Department of the Interior Meritorious Service Award, Department of the Interior Distinguished Service Award, and Meritorious Executive Award.
Upon retirement, Bruce and Betty moved to the village and soon became involved in a variety of activities. Bruce served in many capacities with the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), the last office being President of the Arkansas Federation of Chapters. He served four years as a member of the HSV Board of Directors, two of which as Vice President, past member of Whittington Masonic Lodge #365, having served as Master, the Sahara Shrine, HSV Shrine Club, HSV Shrine “Klassy Klowns”, HSV VFW Post #10483, and a member of Village United Methodist Church where he served in numerous responsibilities. Bruce and Betty traveled extensively visiting all continents except Antarctica and some of the Caribbean Islands. Both held Advanced Scuba Certifications.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Betty of 58 years, daughters Barbara Weetman of New York and Deborah Weetman, brother David (Kathy) Weetman of Hopewell Jct., NY, sister-in-law Eleanor Phelps of Wichita, KS, nephews David (Jill) Weetman, Michael (Melanie) Weetman, Michael Phelps, Bruce (Becky) Owens, Brian Owens, and William Owens, nieces Nedra Sekera and Cynthia Phelps, and several great nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held March 23, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Village United Methodist Church with the Reverend Chris Hemund officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to HSV Shrine Club, HSV VFW Post 10483 or Village United Methodist Church.
